ARTIST - MATTHEW HAGEMANN

Artist Statement

The natural world has its own unique form of intelligence, balance, sense of mystery, and power that dwarf any man made environment. That is what the artist expresses on canvas through his intuition and artistic skills. The paintings exhibit a somewhat realistic quality, but with a bit of a twist. Through the use of stylization, the artist becomes a magician, who gently lures us into the enchanted realm of his imagination, where common landscapes magically become mysterious, dreamlike, surreal, mystical, or even spiritual, where stillness prevails, as if a moment is frozen in time.

With a strong technical foundation, intuitiveness, and skillful stylization, the artist has created this unique and compelling signature style of his own.

Biography

Mr. Hagemann has enjoyed painting and drawing from an early age. He studied architecture at Triton College, and worked for an architectural firm for several years. He loved the beauty of fine architecture and began to pursue a career as an artist specializing in paintings of urban architecture. His background in architectural illustration provided him with a strong foundation in perspective and composition that proved extremely beneficial in his art career. He broadened his repertoire through instruction in oil painting from artist Ruyell Ho. For the past fifteen years he has specialized in paintings of contemporary landscapes. His work is highly stylized and evokes a somewhat surreal, mystical, magical feel. The paintings appear to be somewhere between this world and a dream world, very calm, and very still, almost frozen in time. He is a recipient of a grant from The Pollock – Krasner Foundation.
